Immediate Steps to Take After a Landslide

A landslide on your property can be overwhelming, but acting quickly can prevent further damage and ensure safety. Follow these steps:

Ensure Safety First

  • Evacuate the area if there is an immediate risk to the property structure.

  • Avoid walking on or near the slip area. (some slips are slow and gradually creep downward, but others happen suddenly - something to consider is that a typical one x one meter cube of soil weighs approximately two tonnes (more or less depending on soil composition and saturation levels). Getting caught in a slip will almost certainly cause severe injury or worse.

Assess the Damage

  • Look for structural damage to the building and surrounding structures (out of level floors, support poles, posts or decking. windows or doors not opening or closing in the normal fashion, cracks formed on exterior walls, concrete floors or brick work, failed or undermined retaining walls, and accessways).

  • Identify any at-risk areas that could worsen with additional rainfall. (water flow leading to an area of concern)

  • Check for blocked drainage systems that may be causing excess water buildup. (typically, evident when a certain patch of land is noticeably more saturated or spongey underfoot).

Prevent Further Land Movement

  • remove any debris causing blockages to water drainage systems.

  • Avoid unnecessary weight on unstable ground (vehicles, heavy equipment, etc).

  • If safe to do so, redirect surface water away from the slip area. Overflowing drainage catchments on a property can sometimes be pumped back up to storm water drainage systems or redirected elsewhere. This can reduce water flow and head pressure from putting strain on your property drainage. alternatively, trenching or sand bagging can be done to aid in water redirection.
